Which is Better iPhone or Droid

Thursday, August 5, 2010

Droid by Motorola is so far the toughest iPhone competitor. Both phones are loaded with features a mobile lover like me would die for. Their features also bear a lot of similarities, but that is owing to the fact that they are both smartphones. They are also the best mobile phones in the market and are stunning for their own individual reasons. So the answer to the question 'which is better iPhone or Droid' will vary from person to person. Here I am comparing the various models of the iPhone and the Droid based on their factual features. The final verdict is yours.

Differences Between iPhone and Droid

Here are some of the major differences in both these smartphones, based on several different points. It is important to note that both phones have various models with different features so at times comparison might be difficult. To make things easier, we have compared some of the broad features of both phones, while a model specific comparison has been given as a tabular format below.

Design and Looks
First off, the basic difference in the design of the two phones is that the Apple iPhone is a slab-phone while the Droid is a slider. The curves of the iPhone are soft giving it a friendly feel, whereas the Droid flaunts sharper cuts making it look more professional. The color scheme options are not too many in both the phones. The iPhone comes in black and white color options, while the Droid gives you options like licorice and brown-sugar colors. The Droid models score in the screen size department, but the bigger screen does not have multi-touch ability like the iPhones.

Camera and Image Quality
The iPhone 3GS has a 3 mega pixel camera and auto focus, whereas the Droid boasts of 5 MP camera, auto-focus, dual flash, 4x zoom and image stabilization. The latest version of the iPhone, the iPhone 4, has a 5MP camera, while Droid's latest version, the Droid X, has an 8MP camera. However, in spite of the lower MPs, the image quality of the of both models of the iPhone are superior, along with better auto-focusing ability. The Droid has a hard time focusing in badly lit areas while the iPhone performs well in any light conditions. Due to better auto-focusing, the pictures taken at a short range with the iPhone will be far better than the Droid.

The Keypad
This one can almost be deal breaker in the argument which is better, iPhone or Droid. If you are fond of the physical keypad, then the Droid seems to be a better option, though most users found the quality of the keyboard poor. The iPhone, unfortunately, does not sport a physical keypad, and one has to rely on the extremely good on board virtual keypad. If you are a text messaging addict, you should go for the iPhone as some people have faced problems distinguishing between the keys on the physical keypad of the Droid.

The Software
The Droid uses the Google Android platform which is open source and free to the mobile manufacturers. The iPhone runs on its own OS rooted in objective C. Both the platforms are well designed and state-of-the-art. They also have almost the same features to offer. So there is not much to compare there. It is completely your choice as to which revolution you want to join - Google or Apple. It should be pointed out that, however, since Google is open source, and Apple is not, this makes a huge difference in the applications designed for the OS. See below.

Apple App Store and Android Market
There are almost 239,366 Apple apps in the App Store while Droid apps available in the Android Market recently crossed the 100,000 figure mark. As Android is open source, Google does not monitor the apps developed for it, whereas iPhone apps are moderated by Apple. So you can expect any kind of app for the Android and if you are a developer, you can even make one yourself and see it in the Android Market without waiting for any approval. Another Droid advantage is that it allows you to use multiple apps at a time, while apple lets you keep only the in-built apps running in the background and not any of the third party apps.

iPhone 3GS Vs Droid and iPhone 4 Vs Droid X

Here is the table that we promised you earlier in the article that gives a model specific comparison between the iPhone and the Droid. Though there are multiple models of both phones available (iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4G and Droid, Droid 2, Droid X) we have chosen the most popular phones to compare. The mighty iPhone 4 has been compared with the Droid X, Motorala's latest offering, while the trusty iPhone 3GS has been compared to the Droid. Let's see how they fared.
