office workers more mobile, use tech to work around the clock

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

America's white collar workforce is increasingly mobile and readily uses laptops and smartphones to do their jobs at all hours of the day, at home and even during their time off the company clock, according to a Unisys-IDC survey of 2,820 respondents, including 40% aged 35 or younger.

Office workers -- especially the youngest segment, commonly called "Millennials" -- grew up with consumable technology and have high expectations about how it should work.

"They expect their employers to provide immediate connectivity and support for the consumer technology they want to use," says Sam Gross, Unisys vice president of global IT outsourcing solutions.

Yet those workers aren't getting the support they want from their employers. For example, workers responding to the Unisys-IDC survey gave their employers low marks -- 2.1 on a scale of 5 -- for the IT support they provide for consumer devices and applications.

"The research shows a profound disconnect between what iWorkers are doing with consumer technologies and what IT leaders believe is happening in their organizations," says John Gantz, chief research officer and senior vice president, IDC.

Gross says this "shows a bottom-up revolution in the workplace," with workers "driving use of new technology for greater productivity and customer service."

Specific survey findings:

  • 86% of respondents said they email while on vacation
  • 62% view and send emails from family gatherings
  • 40% aged 18 -25 sent business emails from bed
  • 33% of all respondents send business emails from entertainment events
