A Russian space freighter filled with supplies zoomed past the International Space Station today after its automatic rendezvous and docking system failed to lock on to the orbiting outpost, Florida Today reports.
The Progress 38 spacecraft, loaded with 2.5 tons of supplies and equipment, was about to begin the final stage of its rendezvous when the glitch occurred.
Instead, it glided by the space station at a safe distance of several miles, according to a NASA mission commentator.

Update at 6:19 p.m. ET: Russia's space agency Roskosmos says that the craft is under control and that another docking attempt would be made Sunday, Agence France-Presse reports. Earlier the Interfax news agency said the ISS commander, Alexander Skvortsov, had told mission control that the cargo vessel was seen in a state of "uncontrollable spinning."
