Discovery Channel Hostage Taker Killed by Police

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

James Lee had a long-running issue with the programming coming out of Discovery Communications in Silver Spring, MD. The company produces shows for several channels in its network, including The Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Science Channel and Planet Green.

Lee entered the building sometime around mid-day yesterday and promptly took at least three hostages, including an unarmed security guard. In addition to at least one firearm, Lee also had what appeared to be explosive devices strapped to his body. Authorities were quickly able to make contact with Lee and begin a dialogue, although it is unclear exactly what Lee's demands may have been.

In some of Lee's writings that were online, he ranted about the programming on the Discovery networks being detrimental to the planet. Specifically, he talked about programs that either distracted from the issues of global warming and saving the planet and animals. He also talked about programming that promoted the accelerated proliferation of the human races, alluding apparently to Kate Plus 8 and other shows that glorify having extraordinarily large numbers of children.

Lee was killed by police snipers when it appeared that he raised his weapon toward one of the hostages. No hostages were injured and approximately 1900 people were safely evacuated from the offices of Discovery Communications without incident.
