How To Find A Great Unregistered Domain Name

Thursday, December 2, 2010

When trying to find a great unregistered domain name it can be a frustrating experience where all the good names seem to have been taken. Here are some tips on finding a good unregistered domain.

Sometimes, only the.com may have been registered, so in this case I would register the.net,.org or.co.uk (if applicable).

Now, to start searching for an available domain name, you want to get together a list of keywords that relate to your proposed website. An online keyword suggestion tool is a great way to do this. But avoid trademarked terms such as popular brand names.

Starting with some seed keywords, enter these into the search term suggestion tool, sort them in order of search volume, and scroll down the list looking for key phrases of 2 words or more. If there is strong competition for the keywords, you need to go deeper down the list to have a chance of finding keywords that have not been registered as domains yet. Also, ensure that there is sufficient search volume to make it worthwhile optimizing for a particular keyword.

Another way of getting keyword suggestions is to enter your seed keywords into search engines and see what they suggest as they try to guess what you may be searching for.

Both these methods are using data from the search engines, so you know that people are searching for these words. Ideally you will register an exact match domain without filler words. So if the.com is taken, check for the availability of the.net or.org versions. If all are taken, then consider adding a filler word such as "best", "review", "guide" etc. But, avoid using dashes and numbers since it makes it difficult to pass on your domain name by word of mouth or remember it correctly.

However, sometimes it does make sense to insert a hyphen where it is applicable or to avoid having a very long keyword domain.

By preparing a list of potential keywords before visiting the domain registrar, you can save time, and frustration when having to try multiple ideas to identify an unregistered domain name.
